There are many different opinions on this matter and it is not possible to say definitively what is and what is not natural, at least, not in a way that would please eveyone! Some people will not accept "nature-identical", for example (although those who do it because they claim it is not as safe as the same compound extracted from nature are kidding themselves!). There are several preservatives that can be described as nature-identical - benzoic acid, sorbic acid, methylparaben (and ethyl and propylparabens), benzyl alcohol - all of them good, safe preservatives. Truly natural (in the sense of taking from nature without any processing whatsoever)is not possible due to the variability in composition of these types of systems.Denenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576193721438411808.post-34137410543950429932010-03-29T19:17:13.504-04:002010-03-29T19:17:13.504-04:00"when I was asked if I make all natural soap ..."when I was asked if I make all natural soap and other products, my answer was no, and followed by "There is no such thing as ""all natural"" in the manufacturing of cosmetics."

I have to disagree with you...I know plenty of people who make "all natural" cosmetics. This may come out sounding harsh and if so, I am sorry...but I have been down this road a long time.

People often say there is no such thing as natural because their products are not natural, and so it is anti-natural marketing.

Years ago I founded an organization called the Natural Ingredient Resource Center, and we defined natural using the USDA National Organic Program as the example. The comment period ended on January 31, 2005.

The NIRC offers the definition of natural ingredient for the purpose of establishing working standards for labeling natural ingredients and natural products as a service to the natural products industry.

Saying that a natural product = no perservatives ... One observer has contacted me and said that I am the only other person to say that preservatives are potential killers. I have to make it very clear that I did NOT say that preservatives are potential killers (of people, which was the implication in the comment I received). They have the potential (stress POTENTIAL - this can be high or low) to damage cells. I also stress that I used the word "damage", not "kill". I cannot overstate that they are VERY carefully regulated, so I will be very disappointed if anyone chooses to misrepresent what I have said, and twists my words to imply that the preservatives permitted for use in the EU are a high risk to human health. They are not!Denenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576193721438411808.post-46259746319590823492010-03-27T10:14:25.389-04:002010-03-27T10:14:25.389-04:00Angela -

From the questions that I've been asked when selling at Farmers Markets particularly here in Illinois, the public is very unknowlageable about what natural really means, and when I was asked if I make all natural soap and other products, my answer was no, and followed by "There is no such thing as ""all natural"" in the manufacturing of cosmetics." I was given quizzical looks as if I didn't know what they were really asking about, and sometimes lost a sale. However I'd rather lose a sale than to misinform ppl that that it's ok to use "all natural" cosmetics with no perservatives and that their skin will be better off for it.

AngelaThe Beauty Clutchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10716102842484198173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576193721438411808.post-49576619295716300822010-03-27T03:37:45.017-04:002010-03-27T03:37:45.017-04:00Hi Alana,
It may be the weekend, but I don't ...Hi Alana,

It may be the weekend, but I don't sleep and replying to questions on this blog is fast becoming one of my main hobbies! (And I am enjoying it - so keep them coming!)

The question you ask may seem fairly straightforward, but it raises huge issues, and there is no simple, brief answer - and if anyone tries to give you a simple, brief answer, don't trust them! I should emphasise that my main area of expertise is in preservatives, but I pick up lots of other interesting bits of information along the way, and I am happy to share my understanding and experience where I can. If I don't know the answer, or feel unable to offer even an opinion, I will make this clear.

The reply I will give will probably raise even more questions than it answers., but here goes . . .

Firstly, it is difficult to know exactly what you mean by "interactions". If you mean different chemicals that have the same adverse effect, then there may be some work out there, but there is so much information continually being generated in the scientific literature that most people are only able to try to keep up with their own specific areas of interest/expertise. There are so many different possible interactions that any work on this will be relatively limited.

Another way to interpret your question is by taking "interactions" to mean "reactions". This is totally different. This would mean looking at the chemicals that are entering the environment and seeing if any react with each other with a view toi determining if these reactions produce any new chemicals that could cause problems. Again, this is a huge ptoential area, and any work here would only be scratching the surface.

Most of the environmental work carried out these days is almost certainly focussed on the potential environmental/health effects of just one or two chemicals (per study - not overall!). A particular area of high activity is in looking at environmental oestrogens. The biggest problem here is not cosmetics, but the contraceptive pill! The hormones used in the pill are not completely metabolised in the body, and much of it enters the environment. This is, arguably, a much greater problem than anything the cosmetcis industry could cause.

Many people make a big deal of the number of different chemicals entering the environment (and also the number of chemicals applied to the body via cosmetics). The implication that the number of chemicals is somehow related to safety is a nonsense. Exposure to 5 chemicals is not neccesarily any more safe than exposure to 500! It depends entirely upon the nature of the chemicals involved - both from a environmental and a human health point of view. In other words, if 500 chemicals released into the environment all completely break down within a few days, this is infinitely better than 5 chemicals released into the environment that don't break down and accumulate in fish, ultimately killing them.

I may have seemed to have drifted off the point there, but I sensed a question behond the question, if you see what I mean.

I realise that I may not have completely answered the question, but I hope I have helped a little!

I have a question for you, now (revenge!) - do you think that natural chemicals are always more safe and better than synthetic ones?Denenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576193721438411808.post-42112260130352519682010-03-26T20:29:36.938-04:002010-03-26T20:29:36.938-04:00Alana -

Off the top of my head, I am not aware of any studies specifically to measure interactions between the chemicals found in cosmetics and the chemicals we come in contact with on a daily basis, but that doesn't mean the studies don't exist.

I am going to defer your questions to Dene and hopefully he can provide the information you are looking for. If not, I will find the answer for you. It is always great to get clear concise information on personal care ingredients.

My biggest concern with natural and synthetic chemicals in cosmetics in the interactions between those chemicals and the chemicals we come across in our everyday lives. I know you mentioned this briefly but are there studies done specifically to measure chemical interactions (negative or positive)?? I also have concerns about the chemicals in personal care products and their interactions with other chemicals that make there way into our water systems. Whilst this product is not permitted for use as a preservative in the strictest sense, if it can be said to have another function (whatever that may be), then it can be used, although the other function should be justified as being a primary function, with the preservative action being only secondary. This is a huge loophole in the EU regulations, and many people exploit it. I will leave it up to you to decide how you proceed.

Now I really am going out for that drink!Denenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576193721438411808.post-46594972618449828952010-03-26T15:40:14.058-04:002010-03-26T15:40:14.058-04:00You are most welcome Esther! As ever, with almost anything connected with preservation, there is no simple answer (or perhaps it's just me!). There is little doubt in my mind that this product can be effectively used as a preservative. The use concentrations tend to be within 0.1 - 0.3%. That is my positive comment. Now for the (slightly) negative:

Whether or not this is truly natural will depend entirely on your own interpretation of what "natural" means, as I explained in my interview. The product is a combination of citric acid and silver citrate. The true preservative action comes from the silver, whereas citric acid helps the activity by binding with iron, which is essential to microbial cells. Citric acid exists in nature, and silver exists in nature, although I am not certain if silver citrate itself exists in nature. I doubt that this is the case, but I must stress that this is my opinion only!

So, what I am saying is that you need to make up your own mind as to whether or not this product meets your definition of "natural". In other words - I am copping out (does that translate from English to American?)!

For completeness, I will add that this is not on the list of permitted preservatives in the European Union, although that does NOT mean that it is not safe for use - it just means that you can't use it as a preservative in products intended to be sold in the EU.

I am delighted to try to answer any questions as far as I am able, but please bear in mind that I am based in the UK and there is a small(?) time difference, so please be patient if it takes me some time to respond. I DO have a life beyond preservatives, and I am going out for a drink tonight (in about 2 hours' time!).

Have a great weekend everyone!Denenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576193721438411808.post-46188390017880939812010-03-26T14:35:51.733-04:002010-03-26T14:35:51.733-04:00Esther it is!Esther it is!Esther Jo & Ruth Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08604459017025145679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5576193721438411808.post-87619905347287797572010-03-26T14:05:39.991-04:002010-03-26T14:05:39.991-04:00Holistic Serums -
